Atilano Cardenas

September 22, 1934 — December 4, 2020

Eagle Lake

Atilano better known to all as “Tony” passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020, at Columbus Community Hospital.

He was born on September 22, 1934, in Colorado County to Atilano Sr. and Maria De La Luz Cardenas.

Tony married Lydia Flores on January 2, 1955, in Eagle Lake.

They were blessed with seven children: Joseph Anthony, Michael Lewis, Daniel Lynn, Carol Annette, Atilano, III, David Allen and Mark Adrian Navarro.

Tony was a hard worker. He worked for Lake Motors in Eagle Lake, Anderson Crop Care in Chesterville, and worked as a welder at many gravel pits throughout Colorado County. When Tony retired he soon got bored and went back to work as a part-time welder.

He loved many things. One of his favorite hobbies was picking up junk and selling it on the side. He called them his "antiques".

Tony loved cooking and did so for everyone especially his wife. While doing so he fell in his home fracturing his leg. After a short stay at St. David's in Austin he was diagnosed with the early signs of dementia.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; his parents; son, Atilano III; granddaughters, Elizabeth Ann and Rachel Yvonne Cardenas; brothers, Joe Sr., David Sr., and Refugio Cardenas; and  sister, Effie Navarro.

Tony leaves to cherish his memory, sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony of New York, Michael and Daniel of Austin, David and wife, Stacy of Alleyton and Mark and wife, Jasmine of Eagle Lake; and daughter, Carol of Round Rock; brother, John Cardenas, Sr. of Eagle Lake; sisters, Emma Hernandez of El Campo and Teresa Navarro, Penny Castillo, Simona Rico and Esther Rangel all of Eagle Lake; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 11, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Eagle Lake Funeral Home with Pastor Dianne Aguilera officiating. Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Pallbearers were James Cardenas, Micah Cardenas, Cordero Cardenas, Kris Talton, James Lockett, Jr., and Terelle Parker.
